Science and conscience

As in any other science, character of the research object in landscape studies is independent on personal wishes and desires of scientists. In belief that our surrounding may be managed to sustainability through qualified and rigorous research approach, we try to understand the landscape and consider it our common space for life instead of tool for career goals, we pursue the motto "make change or perish" instead of "publish or perish". We support any research that meets this idea.

Working groups and themes

Landscape assessment This topic represents our primary field of interest, while focusing on methods of integrative landscape assessment, landscape synthesis (social + natural, and potential + risk evaluation), use of GIS and virtual reality technologies in landscape assessment and planning (land cover and land use changes, landscape fragmentation analysis, visual quality assessment, etc.). As a basis for integrative assessment, we use the results of our detailed analyses of natural and social environment.

Environmental geomorphology The working group aims at geomorphologic aspects of natural environment and of cultural landscape assessments. We deal with risk processes (low-onset floods and flash floods, mass movements), anthropogenic transformation of a landscape (mining) and landform-ecostystem relations. In a study of these issues, we apply primarily geomorphological, historical-geographical and biogeomorphologic methods.

Cultural landscapes and identities This theme primarily pursues the socio-cultural values of our environment. We employ concepts of landscape memory, regional identity and community resilience to study current transformtaion of both urban and rural space. We also try to find the ways of implementation of these concepts to landscape and regional planning (involving decision makers, stakeholders, NGOs, etc.).

GeoScape Journal

In 2006, we have established a peer-reviewed journal GeoScape as a platform for geographers, landscape scientists, planners and regional economists to publish their research. Since its beginnings the interdisciplinarity of papers has been strongly encouraged and cross-border and multicultural topics have been accentuated. Further, the papers ideally discuss the relevance of the methodical procedures and the results for public sector, planning and regional development.

Since 2014, the journal is published on DeGruyter platform
